EMDR starts with preparation

Why a first consultation does not necessarily involve processing traumatic memories.

First, history and a plan

EMDR follows a structured sequence of eight phases. The initial stages include history taking, planning and preparation. Processing memories is part of this process, rather than the whole of therapy.

Seeing an EMDR therapist does not mean that you need to describe your most difficult experience in detail at the first meeting. First, it is important to understand your concerns and discuss your readiness for further work.

Preparation has a clear purpose

During preparation, the therapist explains the process and helps establish how you can communicate discomfort and stop the work. The sequence and duration depend on your individual circumstances.

A description of the phases is available in this EMDRIA resource.

What to ask during a consultation

“What are we doing today, and why?”

“How can I let you know that I want to stop?”

“How do you assess whether I am ready for the next stage?”

“What will we do if the proposed approach does not suit me?”

These questions help make the arrangements clear and specific. You do not need to determine the phase of therapy yourself or try to process a difficult memory by following instructions in an article.

How we discuss this in my practice

We start with your current concerns, how the difficulties affect your life and your expectations. I explain the proposed plan and leave time for questions. Using the method requires an individual assessment; the name of a symptom alone cannot determine a suitable plan of work.
